Abstract

TESOL around the globe, as seen through the lens of a UK-based awarding organisation

Trinity College London has been awarding qualifications since 1877, with its first vocational TESOL diploma offered in 1968. With a focus on application of learning to enable communicative skills through assessment, Trinity aims to promote training and assessment which is both personal and authentic. But how successfully does Trinity support teachers with differing professional needs in the variety of TESOL contexts across the globe and what place does research have in the development and creation of its training and assessment processes? This session will explore how our growing understanding of teachers’ needs has influenced the development of Trinity’s approach to TESOL so that it can continue to encourage pedagogical practices relevant to these localised needs. As well as reference to Trinity’s recent and ongoing research, we’ll explore opportunities for future research that links pedagogical theory to teachers’ day-to-day practice.

Speaker

Ben Beaumont is Head of Teacher Education at Trinity College London and having spent time as state school and private language school teacher, as well as a teacher educator for both contexts, he is keen to support the development of teachers’ pedagogical practice. Ben’s research interests include identifying teachers’ development needs, investigating the impact of in-service training and supporting lectures in EMI contexts.
